Dr Satwant Singh

Nurse Consultant in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Dr Satwant Singh qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1990. He specialises in mental health and qualified as Registered Mental Nurse in 1992.

Satwant went on to complete an MSc in Mental Health Intervention and later a post graduate diploma in Cognitive Therapy at Oxford Centre for Cognitive Therapy. In 2013 he gained his MSc in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Additionally he has had extensive training both in the UK and US. Satwant is registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and is accredited as a therapist, trainer and supervisor by the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies.

Satwant has worked as a therapist both in the private sector and the NHS providing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and has extensive experience in working with a wide range of psychological difficulties. He has worked with large organisations in developing a culture of mental and physical well- being. He was appointed as Nurse Consultant in CBT and Mental Health in 2003 and currently he is a Clinical Lead for an IAPT service.

Satwant set up the first innovative primary care CBT service in East London in 2001 with therapists based in GP surgeries. The success of this service was replicated in 2005 the Newham Demonstration site for the initial government’s Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) pilot where he was the deputy clinical lead. The IAPT programme is now available throughout England. Currently he is a Clinical Lead for an IAPT service.

Satwant has been providing teaching and training both nationally and internationally. He regularly presents at conferences. He provides supervision to a range of clinicians both in the UK and internationally and is a regular reviewer for academic journals and Mindapps.org which is a online resource of professionally reviewed mental health and wellbeing mobile applications (apps). Additionally, Satwant supervises both qualified and trainee CBT therapists.

Currently, he facilitates with his colleague Margaret Hooper the UK's only national treatment group for those suffering from hoarding disorder. This group was set up in 2005 and provides group based therapy. He has developed innovative experiential interventions for the treatment of hoarding disorder. He has undertaken research and published on hoarding disorder together with his colleague Dr Colin Jones.

His research interests include hoarding disorder, first and second languages and impact on therapy.
